Ask Audio magazine
Print magazine
So ask me, ask me, ask me...
2013 to 2014 - taoyoyo
Client: Ask Audio
Roles: Art direction, design, production
Through a serendipitous encounter in 2013 I was asked on board as Art Director for Ask Audio's digest-sized print magazine. The perfect project for a music technology head.
I worked with the Executive Editor on refreshing the type choices and feel of the title, steering it away from it's previous '3-D Tech' feel to a more flat design.
Some of the challenges were unique to this publication... the magazine features a section of Tutorials and although screengrabs from software work fine for their online component, making them look as good as possible in a print situation took some trial, error and Photoshop trickery.
Another Tutorial puzzle that needed solving was that the tutorials were all manufacturer or product led and needed to reflect that in the opening image of each, while retaining a common feel and not looking too 'branded'. I created an icon for each based on the company's/products marks) on a black background and placing the headline on white strips over them helped keep the hierachy intact. (see final sample for a strip of all these Tutorial headers).
